What is Fresh Picks by Deardorff Organics? Our organics program launched in 2006, and we now offer over 20 different varieties of organic vegetables and fruits grown under the Deardorff Organics label. Fresh Picks is our first direct-to-consumer program, allowing us to share our organic produce that is grown in Ventura County with those who live near our farms and want to enjoy fresh, local vegetables and fruits! You can subscribe to receive a bi-weekly (every other week) variety box filled with Deardorff Organics produce, along with items grown by other local organic farms. You will pick up your box at one of our convenient locations around Ventura County.
How much does it cost? We offer 1 size All-Organic box for $25.00/box, filled with a variety of Certified Organic Deardorff Family Farms grown products as well as produce from other local organic growers.
What is in the boxes? You will see about 9-11 different items in each box. You will not pick your individual items, but rather enjoy a variety selection chosen by Deardorff Family Farms according to what’s freshest and in season! You may see items such as green, black or red kale, romaine, red and green leaf lettuce, cilantro, parsley, cauliflower, rainbow carrots, strawberries, arugula, zucchini, beets, green beans, oranges, tangerines, radishes, lemons, and more! It will be mostly vegetables, with a few fruits.
Every Friday before a delivery week, you will receive an E-Newsletter about what you may see in your box for that following week.
Why can’t I pick the individual items in my box? One of the many great aspects of Ventura County and Southern California is the temperate climate and rich, nutrient-filled soils, allowing for a wide assortment of crops to be grown all year round. With Fresh Picks, we want to choose the freshest, best quality, and best tasting seasonal vegetables and fruits for you, filling your boxes with a variety of produce each time. Also, we all know that Mother Nature can be fickle and ever-changing. Sometimes we may have to make last minute changes to your Fresh Picks due to an unforeseen occurrence that could affect the availability of certain items. But we will always make sure to supply you with a fresh and full box, and plenty of recipe ideas!
Where are the vegetables and fruits coming from? Here at Deardorff Family Farms, we grow a wide variety of Certified Organic products. Most of the items you see in your Fresh Picks are grown here in our fields here of Ventura County. In addition, there are many other organic farms in Ventura County and close surrounding counties that grow items we do not have, such as citrus, avocados, onions, and apples. We will be supporting other organic farmers by adding in their delicious fruits and vegetables to your Fresh Picks, so you will get to taste and enjoy an array of amazing products in each box!
How do I sign up? You can access the sign up link from our Fresh Picks website www.DeardorffFamilyFarms.com/fp . You will be directed to our sign up process within Farmigo, which is a web-based software company that helps farms like ours set up these direct-to-consumer programs, allowing people easier access to fresh, local produce. You will follow the steps of the process, choosing your pick-up location, day, and time, box frequency, payment option, and create an account with your email and a password. How do I pay? After you create your account with an email and password, you will be prompted to enter in your credit/debit card information. Our Payment Type is Debit-on-Delivery; your card will be charged $25.00 automatically each time you get a delivery. You will get a statement by email. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. We do not store any of your personal or financial information; our order site is run by Farmigo, and we use a secure gateway company, Authorize.net, to store your card information.
Why do I need an account? Your box, your pick-up location, and your account activity are all displayed on this profile. You can view your profile, change your pick up location, credit card info, password, or place a temporary vacation or suspension hold just by signing in to your account.
How do I access my account? This link will take you to the Current Members sign-in page. You can also access it by clicking “MEMBERS” logo at the bottom of any page on our Fresh Picks website. https://www.farmigo.com/account/deardorfforganicsfreshpicks/CSA
Why do you need my E-Mail address? Deardorff Organics Fresh Picks communicates with you via email on a regular basis to inform you of a payment, remind you of a scheduled pick up, and to let you know what you may see in your Fresh Picks that week. Sometimes we will need to send out alerts about your order, or inform you about happenings on our farm that may impact your delivery. By becoming a member of our Fresh Picks program, you are agreeing to open and read all email communications as soon as you see them, since much of the information is time sensitive.
Where do I pick up my box? The first step of the sign up process will be to choose a pick up location. You will see the days and pick up times listed for each location. These businesses around Ventura County that have agreed to serve as distribution centers for Fresh Picks. Once we deliver to the locations, it is your responsibility to pick up your box. You will see a note next to each location with specific instructions on getting your Fresh Picks. When you arrive at the pick-up site, the boxes will either be stored out front or in the back. Ask an employee at the location where the Fresh Picks boxes are. There will be list of member’s names at each location who paid for a box that week. Please be sure your name is checked off the list when you pick up and DO NOT take a box if your name is not on the list. If you think your name should have been on the list, let us know the next day and we will look at your account details.
What if I forget to pick up my box, or arrive after the location closes? Our locations have agreed to hold the boxes until the next day, so if you miss your pick up, call or email Fresh Picks and we can try to assist you. The pick-up locations are not responsible for refrigerating your box overnight. If they do not hear from you and you forget, or are not able to pick up your box, arrangements will be made for it to be donated to an interested party or facility.
We’re sorry but we cannot give a credit or refunds for boxes that are not picked up; but don’t worry, the produce will not go to waste!
Can I change my pick up location? If you want to change your pick up location, please do so by midnight on the Sunday before your delivery week. To do this, log into your account and you will see a green box on the right that summarizes your current subscription. Click the blue button that says “Change Location”, and you will see a list to choose from. Select your new location and then click the blue button that says “Save and Close” at the top. If you switch and then want to switch back, you’ll need to log into your account again to do so.
What if I will be out of town or cannot pick up my box a certain week? Within your account, Farmigo allows you to put your Fresh Picks delivery on a temporary hold. When you log in, click on the Delivery Hold tab at the far right, select the date range that you cannot pick up the order, and click save. Please do this by midnight on the Sunday before your delivery week. Your credit/debit card will not be charged while your delivery is on hold. After the hold date passes, you will start receiving your normal scheduled boxes and will continue to be charged.
What if I am unfamiliar with some of the items in my box? It’s great to learn and try new things, as we all know! Especially fresh, healthy produce. We will have a recipe index posted on our website, and add recipe ideas to Facebook. Each week of delivery, we will send out an E-newsletter regarding what’s in your box that week, and will have links to recipes as well. Plus, you can always email us for suggestions or with questions!
Do you give refunds? Deardorff Family Farms has been providing customers with the freshest, best tasting fruits and vegetables since 1937, while engaging in sustainable farming practices that use fewer chemicals, protect the environment, and yield healthy and delicious produce. If you believe you deserve a credit for poor quality, damaged, or otherwise unusable produce, please contact Christine at FreshPicks@DeardorffFamilyFarms.com. We will evaluate cases individually. Be sure to include what day/time/place you picked up the produce and how it was stored.
If I have any questions and need to call Fresh Picks while within my Farmigo Account, where do I find Fresh Picks’ contact info?
If you go to Pick up Directions tab within your account, you will see Christine Smith’s contact info listed underneath your pick-up location’s info.
How do I cancel? There is no obligation to sign up for a specific time frame. You may cancel your subscription at any time, giving us 3 days’ notice before your pick up day by calling Christine at 805-200-5216 or sending her an email at FreshPicks@DeardorffFamilyFarms.com. Please be sure you get a confirmation email back confirming your cancellation.
